What's There to Like About Ireland?

Here are just a few things ...

- Ireland is magic, the land of leprechauns, fairies, fairy forts, and rainbows. It's the land of St. Patrick chasing snakes, folk music, ancient tales, the land of blarney!

- The people are friendly and cheerful, always eager to engage in conversation.

- Ireland is an easy-going, rural society, laid back, minimal stress.

- The Irish love the U.S. as many have relatives in the U.S. or lived there themselves, at one time, so they are especially friendly to Americans.

- Ireland has excellent access to the U.S. and the continent by way of two major international airports (Shannon and Dublin) and a number of smaller airports serving the European continent. It also has an extensive system of ferry boats to and from England, Scotland and France.

- The people speak English, albeit with an accent, making communication relatively simple.

- The country has become very European and very popular with European travelers. One has to work at avoiding interesting and colorful travelers if one wishes to do so.

- Ireland has one of the most homogeneous populations in the world, which means there is minimal internal disagreement with respect to race, values and standards.

- Ireland is a country of exceptional beauty, with scenery changing every few miles. There is very little "sameness" anywhere. And one is never very far from the ocean or inland.

- Ireland has a population of only 4 million residents with about half of them living in Dublin. This means the rest of the country is relatively unpopulated, very rural.

- At only one-third the size of the state of Colorado, Ireland is manageable for any traveler.

- There's virtually no traffic outside of the Dublin metro area and there never will be much by U.S. and European standards. Ireland is not connected to the mainland by bridges. No traffic "passes through" on its way to somewhere else.

- Ireland is part of the European Community and the Common Market, which means it now enjoys a fantastic economy and a high standard of living.

- Roads are being built to European Community standards, which means that relative to its little traffic, Ireland's highway system is emerging as nothing less than tremendous.

- Irish tax laws favor artists, including writers and speakers, and there is no real estate tax on residential housing.

- The clean air will not be polluted by others. There is no industry to the west, only the ocean which is the source of prevailing winds.

- Ireland has a moderate climate, due to the Gulf Stream ocean currents. It rarely freezes. It is never hot and it is not as wet as people think.

- The country is not a strategic target for any other country and that status is unlikely to change.

… and this is no blarney!
